    Investment trusts
Martin Currie Investment Management Ltd is investment manager to a number of investment trusts. These investment trusts have independent Boards of Directors. The trusts are listed on the London Stock Exchange and adhere to the UK Listing Authority's rules. Please note that, as the shares in investment trusts are traded on a stockmarket, the share price will fluctuate in accordance with supply and demand and may not reflect the underlying net asset value of the shares. Depending on market conditions and market sentiment, the spread between the purchase and sale price can be wide. Investment trusts may also borrow money in order to make further investments. This is known as "gearing" and can enhance shareholder returns in rising markets but, conversely, can reduce them in falling markets.

You should note that split capital trusts are more complex than conventional trusts owing to the different classes of shares that they issue. In addition, they may have a limited life with a pre-determined wind-up date.

Essentially, split capital trusts are designed to cater for investors with different investment objectives. Normally established for a fixed period of time, these trusts have different classes of shares. Each class has different rights during the life of the trust, and when the trust is wound up. For example, one class of share may be entitled to most or all of the income generated by the trust's portfolio; another might receive most or all of the capital growth. You should note that such trusts could be highly geared.

    Risk warnings

  • Past performance is not a guide to future returns.

  • The value of investments and the income from them may go down as well as up and is     not guaranteed. An investor may not get back the amount originally invested.

  • Changes in the rates of exchange may cause the value of investments to go up or down.

  • Where funds are invested in markets which may be considered 'emerging', then the risk     inherent in the fund is higher. These funds are only suitable for those investors who     are prepared to accept the above average volatility inherent in emerging market     investment.

  • Investment in derivative instruments, including futures, options or contracts for     differences, carries a high risk of loss, the markets in these investments being highly     volatile.

  • For risks relating to specific products, please refer to the relevant documentation for that product.
